Jonathan Shelton, DMD, MD

The most rewarding thing about being an oral surgeon is the impact that you’re able to have on somebody’s life — a new smile and to see how they light up and how now they’re more social.

Meet Dr. Shelton

Originally from Somerset, Kentucky, Dr. Shelton is dedicated to bringing a small-town feel to The Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Specialists of San Diego. His path to becoming an oral and maxillofacial surgeon began in his teens when he was given the opportunity to work in his brother-in-law’s orthodontic practice and was inspired to pursue the dentistry field. After his second year of dental school, Dr. Shelton went to Belize on a mission trip where he performed various types of oral surgery — it was on that trip that Dr. Shelton discovered his calling to become an oral surgeon.

Dr. Shelton is passionate about changing his patient’s lives for the better and feels privileged to witness the incredible moments he sees every day in his practice: improved self-confidence, happiness, and restored smiles. He wants his patients to know that at The Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Specialists of San Diego, the patient’s needs come first, and they will be treated like family. Our team works hard to give every patient an experience that they would recommend to a friend. As a nervous patient himself, Dr. Shelton understands that undergoing dental work or oral surgery can cause some anxiety, so he always takes the time to communicate clearly with his patients about every aspect of their treatment. It’s Dr. Shelton’s personal goal to do whatever it takes to create a calm, caring environment for his patients.

Education and Residency

Dr. Shelton attended the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky, earning a degree in biology in 2012. He continued at the University of Louisville to complete both dental school and medical school, graduating in 2015. He decided to pursue the OMS specialty and went on to complete a hands-on, hospital-based residency program in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Continuing his path to becoming a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Shelton earned acceptance into the respected oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program at the University of Louisville, where he focused on dentoalveolar surgery, hard and soft tissue regeneration, and complex dental implant therapy. It was during Dr. Shelton’s residency that he met Dr. Koshgerian.

Dr. Shelton is board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ABOMS). In order to achieve this certification status, Dr. Shelton had to undergo a rigorous peer evaluation process and demonstrate the requisite skills, knowledge, and training in the field.

Dr. Shelton has a passion for service, and it is important to him to be a part of the local community any way he can, particularly via the church. He enjoys the beautiful San Diego surroundings and takes every opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with his wife and “fur babies,” as well as going indoor rock climbing, taking spin classes, and trying out great restaurants.
