About Dr. Mayer
Dr. Mayer was drawn to oral surgery by the unique ability to combine artistic creativity, medical knowledge, and technical skill to transform a patient's life and confidence. He treats every patient like family, striving to create a calm, relaxed, and lighthearted environment that puts anxious patients at ease. He is highly collaborative, regularly working alongside general dentists and specialists to achieve long-term, functional results that allow his patients to smile with pride. For Dr. Mayer, excellent care means helping patients solve complex problems that bridge dentistry and medicine while making them feel supported every step of the way.
Education and Residency
Dr. Mayer completed his undergraduate studies in biomedical sciences at Western Michigan University, followed by a master's degree in basic medical sciences at Wayne State School of Medicine. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, graduating near the top of his class and earning induction into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) National Dental Honor Society.
Driven by a passion for complex procedures and continuing education, he completed his hospital-based residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Loyola University Medical Center and the Hines VA Hospital in the Chicago area, serving as Chief Resident. During his rigorous training, he excelled in dentoalveolar surgery, bone grafting, and complex implant dentistry under the mentorship of top minds in the specialty.
Certifications
Dr. Mayer is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) and a Diplomate of the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology (NDBA). To achieve these distinctions, he underwent a rigorous evaluation process demonstrating the highest level of surgical skill, anesthesia safety, and clinical knowledge. He is also a Fellow of both the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA).
Outside the Office
Dr. Mayer and his wife first fell in love with San Diego while she attended UCSD—it is even the city where they got engaged—and they are thrilled to finally make it their permanent home. Having grown up near the water, he loves being outdoors, golfing, and snowboarding. He also has a deep passion for service, having previously served as a mission trip chair to organize dental outreach trips providing oral surgery to underserved communities in Guatemala and Mexico.
Patients might be surprised to learn that before finding his true calling in dentistry, Dr. Mayer sampled a wide variety of the job market—including making pizzas, building decks, teaching labs, and even waxing yachts!
