What are the symptoms of wisdom teeth coming in?
Sometimes there are no symptoms at all! But if you or your child experiences discomfort or swelling in the area behind the back molars, or an unpleasant taste or smell in the mouth indicating infection, a dental examination should be scheduled as soon as possible to find out if the wisdom teeth are impacted or there is a related infection. It is recommended that your child have regular dental examinations every six months to track the development of their wisdom teeth so that treatment can be started before problems arise.
Is wisdom teeth extraction painful?
Usually, wisdom teeth are extracted while the patient is under intravenous (IV) sedation. They are completely unaware of the procedure taking place and there will be no sensation of pain. The anesthesia that was decided upon during the consultation will be administered by your oral surgeon — don’t worry, no procedure will take place until you or your child is at ease and ready. Patients receive a prescription for pain medication to control any post-operative discomfort, but we find that over-the-counter pain medications work fine for most of our patients that have undergone wisdom teeth removal.
Are wisdom teeth always extracted?
Some people do not ever require a wisdom teeth extraction. However, in most cases, the human jaw is not large enough to accommodate wisdom teeth. Your family dentist can track the development of your or your child’s wisdom teeth – if they seem to be positioned poorly or are becoming impacted, you will be referred to a trusted oral surgeon for extraction. Early diagnosis and removal can save time, money, and discomfort later.
Why do oral surgeons extract wisdom teeth? Why not have my dentist perform this surgery?
Because most wisdom teeth extractions are performed before the molars have erupted, the techniques for removal are often beyond the scope of a general dentist. When teeth must be removed from beneath the gum tissue and overlying bone, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is the most qualified provider to attend to the treatment. Oral surgeons have years of additional training in surgery and anesthesia to safely remove impacted teeth and address the complications that can occur.
What is the recovery like after wisdom teeth removal?
Two to four days is usually enough recovery time for patients who have undergone a wisdom teeth extraction procedure to return to normal daily routines. For at least three days following wisdom teeth extraction, you or your child should adhere to a diet of soft foods. Be sure to avoid smoking and the use of a straw during the recovery period as indicated by your oral surgeon. Detailed pre- and post-operative instructions will be provided before the treatment to ensure that the surgery and recovery is as smooth as possible.
