Anesthesia Options

The team at The Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Specialists of San Diego is dedicated to providing you with excellent oral surgery care. To help you feel relaxed about your procedure and to eliminate pain during surgery, we offer a variety of anesthesia options at our practice. During your initial consultation with your oral surgeon, your options for anesthesia will be discussed in depth. The right anesthesia will be added to your treatment plan based on the type of procedure you are having, your level of anxiety about the procedure, and your individual health concerns. Because anesthesia does carry some risk, it is crucial for you to receive anesthesia from a doctor that has the proper training and expertise. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete hospital-based anesthesia training and maintain certifications in advanced cardiac life support to ensure you have a safe sedation experience. Dr. Koshgerian and Dr. Shelton are highly experienced in administering office-based anesthesia and our assisting team members are highly trained as well. You will be monitored continuously during and after your surgery.

EXPAREL® Provides Long-Lasting Pain Relief

EXPAREL is a single-dose, non-narcotic pain relief option for patients undergoing oral surgery. EXPAREL is administered by our doctors during the procedure and starts to take effect before the anesthesia wears off.

This non-opioid option works by numbing the area where surgery was performed, controls pain during surgery, and continues to provide pain relief for several days. Clinical studies on patients given EXPAREL during their wisdom teeth removal surgery reported less pain and required fewer opioids.

Visit the EXPAREL website to learn more about this opioid-free option for pain relief.

Why are opioid-based pain medications risky?

Opioids are narcotics. They are in a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin as well as some medications that are commonly prescribed by doctors for pain management. These medications can have serious side effects if they are not used properly.

Prescription opioid-based drugs include:

For many years, the standard in post-surgical pain relief treatment was to prescribe an opioid-based medication. Unfortunately, this has led to an opioid addiction crisis in our city and across our country.

Opioids have a high risk of dependence for anyone, anywhere, at any age. By offering highly effective non-opioid pain control during oral surgeries performed at The Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Specialists of San Diego, Dr. Paul Koshgerian and Dr. Jonathan Shelton hope to keep their patients safe from the risks of opioid medications.
